Gas Prices

According to a price survey released this week, New Mexico has the second highest gas prices in the nation--just behind Hawaii!

And, just to make it really special, Santa Fe has the highest prices in New Mexico. Current price here for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.20 a gallon. . . I don't even want to tell you what I pay for premium gas. . .

Of course an investigation has been launched (and naturally we're waiting with bated breath).

We just paid $2.64 per gallon this afternoon - in Carmel Church, VA.

What is almost always overlooked when making national gas price comparisons is that in places like Santa Fe and other locales above 3,000 feet, the gas mixture has a lower octane. So for example when you say that regular unleaded is 3.20, that is most likely for 85 octane, which is not even for sale at lower altitudes. So these are not proper comparisons. It's not like comparing apples to apples but more like apples to crabapples!

Ahh Americans, allways complaining about gas prices. Round where I am (North Britain) it's currently teetering just under $10 a gallon so you have a ways to go yet.

Thanks for your comment, Ben. I know we're lucky in this regard--but we're also conditioned to doing a lot more driving than you folks--and our public transportation systems have always lagged behind, giving many of us few alternatives.
